Tripods! Board of this game already....

This week I have uploaded the artwork for the board game, ready to be printed. Now I have to work on the cards and have patience whilst my lovely partner paints the stunning images for the box and character art. Here's a sneak preview of the board as the game starts:

And as the Red Weed takes hold:

  1. Looks great - I'm most intrigued to see how it plays.

I presume the human player has to escape by sea or avoid extermination until our microbial friends save the day?

  2. To explain briefly without giving too much away...

Each player plays humans, there is no alien player. The object of the game is to score survival points by escaping or outliving the martians. The sequence of events is set, players have no control over it, but the exact amount of space between key events and the minor happenings within those spaces are variable. Because everyone is trying to score points and stop each other scoring points it can get quite heated as players shift their pieces (each person has 10 'populace tokens' with which to try and score)to block each other and steal points. It is possible to destroy the Tripods that wander about the board (scoring points by doing so), but you have to use military units to do so and as the game goes on the number of available units become fewer. Escape is by steamer from Tillingham or by rail from one of the stations, but as the invasion progresses the stations begin to close and eventually so do the docks, making escape far more difficult. As the game goes on the red weed also spreads (as shown above) which makes the surviving pieces a whole lot more vulnerable to the martian Heat Ray. There is a degree of player control over events in the form of character cards which can be played to influence aspects otherwise out of players' jurisdiction- but it costs points to use these and you only get to use each one once.

    3. Of course that's ok! I'm getting two or three trial copies run out for September to playtest at The Weekend at the Asylum in Lincoln and Bristol Steampunk Literary festival. Then we'll refine and go for a full production run, hopefully by Christmas. Mailing lists will be available for pre-order soon.
