So it is said in the 'Paint your wagon, er, orc!' article in the Heroquest Marvel Winter special below a picture of Mike McVey's stunning metal prototype gargoyle miniature. Here is the very thing itself in the Foundry cabinets.
This weekend I got a nice lot of painting done, including a new crown jewel for my collection, my very own metal prototype gargoyle.
For some reason he was extremely hard to photograph and it really doesn't do him justice. Happily he was a joy to paint, sometimes when you have these holy grails they can be quite disappointing to put colour on but this chap really painted himself.
Here he is with some mates, a genuine Bloodthirster and my (somewhat oversized it turns out!) attempt at sculpting one in the middle. All good practice for the eventual original miniature.
And here he is with his plastic counterparts.
I was about to say he's not far off in scale to the actual Blood Thirster and then saw that is was your sculpt, which is a compliment that your own sculpt, whilst bigger, is not far off in terms of actual look.
ReplyDeleteHead's too wide, might have to have another go at it.
DeleteI think he's pretty ace Matey.

ReplyDeleteAmazing painting. I really like the way you are plugging away at getting all the HQ variants and limited releases. Dedication.
ReplyDeleteThat might be it for a while... except for the Orc Shaman I have also painted and will be blogging later in the week. I know the HQ Chaos Warrior was given out as a Young Bloods painting trophy at one point, I have seen someone post a photo of the HQ orc prototype (not even Foundry have that one) recently of Facebook (but not for sale. :( ), Orclord has a High Mage and there must be a couple of the necromancers around as there was one in a studio 4th ed undead army... but besides that I haven't seen a single other regular HQ prototype in over a decade of searching.
DeleteJust noticed the original has red glowy eyes in his kneepads! Couldn't see it on the official photos... back to the paint station.
ReplyDeleteI know this is not the point of the blogpost, but that gargoyle coming out of the wall is something else!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think your sculpt is better than the bloodthirster.
Awh thanks. He's definitely a bit cleaner. 😁
DeleteOhh nice work and finally getting a Gargoyle is great.. The wall one a custom job i take it? Also looks like not only are the original kneepad eyes red, but.. have black pupils?.. hard to tell but seam to..
