It's a Dark World after all...

Bite off more than you can chew? Me? Always...

From 'I'm not painting for or bringing anything to BOYL this year' I seem to have swung quite far the other way! It all started with the heroes for Warlock of Firetop- a simple task to paint 6 figures so I could get the board game out for easy gaming over the weekend. That escalated to trying to find and paint a miniature for each of the encounters, and that lead to me purchasing a (cheap!) copy of Dark World intending to use one of the skeletons and an ogre in WoFM. When I put them next to the other models I had selected however they just didn't fit. They'd have suited the plastic heroes fine but were too big and chunky to go well with the other NPCs. Well, I would just have to paint up Dark World and bring that too wouldn't I? The rules look pretty fun after all...

Dark World is Waddingtons' take on Heroquest, but actually has some more interesting dynamics in it. It also has its failings, one of which being not having Citadel Miniatures, but it's worth a look. The models aren't actually terrible. The game is actually set in the Dark Eye (Schwartze Auge) world, although the English language version of the game doesn't reference this. The iconography can be seen in the box art. The big bad is Korak the Kobran, who I have decided is essentially Thulsa Doom. As part of his monster turn he can summon The Haunter, a spectre which travels across the board in a random path and causes anything it passes through to die of terror. The Haunter is a cool model with a big black robe and plug-in reaching hands and skull. Unfortunately my cheap set was missing these plug-in bits so I have improvised with some claws from an old Oakbound Kelpie and a Ral Partha Europe skull. The turn order in the game is determined by shaking the 'Chaos Mace', resulting in balls of the heroes' colour being arranged in a random order. You can see it poking out the top of the castle in the top picture. Korak is clearly holding his own miniature version, hence the Fisher Price colouring on his sacrificial dagger.

The skeletons and mummies come in bone coloured plastic like the HQ monsters. They're therefore super fast to paint! I washed these with Army Painter Light Tone (should have tried out my Skeleton Horde Contrast Paint, forgot I had it!), gave them some spot highlights and painted in glowing green eyes. Job done! One skeleton was missing an arm, but I'm sure loose bones fall off these guys all the time. The objects on their bases by the way are winged sandals. When the Korak player places a monster they choose a magical item to place on the base- these magic shoes, potions or the dreaded fireball grenade! Whoever slays the monster takes the treasure.

The orcs definitely owe something to the Heroquest and Battlemasters designs. They're actually quite dynamic with their advancing pose, not something that will have been easy to machine for injection moulding. Some considerable skill has gone into producing these figures so I can respect them even though they don't quite have the polish of what GW were producing in plastic at the time. They share the same niche as the Heroquest plastics being easy starter figures that look good with a base coat and wash whilst allowing a more advanced painter to add in extra features to the clothing. I feel like this is something not really understood by a lot of modern board game plastic manufacturers who try to pack in as many fiddly details as possible.

All monsters in the game work essentially the same way, rolling two combat dice and inflicting damage on the heroes equal to the number of hits rolled. Where they differ is their own individual hit points. These are hidden under the base of each model. When an adventurer rolls to hit they get to look under the base and need to beat the number they find there in order to kill the monster. Each type of monster has a coloured card disc insert with their hit point number on it, orcs and skeletons being lowest, then ogres and mummies, then the manticore and Korak himself. Within each type there's some variation though so an orc might be 1 or might be 3 HP. Adventurers score based on the HP of monsters they kill (plus other factors) so not revealing the HP of monsters you find and kill then bluffing about how hard or easy they are to kill is all part of the fun.

The ogres are very definitely inspired by the HQ ogres but done as single piece models. The anatomy on these guys is actually extremely good, if necessarily exaggerated. I tried to make them look like miniature versions of the classic Marauder giant. That flaming pineapple on the base is one of the infamous fireball grenades, one-use blast weapons!

I like these mummies! What cool poses. They are pretty huge, towering over 35mm tall, but again their bone-colouring makes it so quick to paint in all those bandages. These have just had an Army Painter Dark Tone wash, nothing else! The faces and hands finish them off.

The manticore is Korak's personal bodyguard. Other monsters can pop up in any room which gets revealed but this beast is only encountered in the arena before Korak's throne. The model was missing the end of its tail so I puttied on a replacement stinger.

I had intended to go all-in on tiger stripes or some other patterning since it's such a big figure with large areas of skin. In the end though I just wanted to get the set done so I opted for a simple sandy lion look with a few leopard spots for good measure. Compared to big modern plastics there's a surprising amount of texture and detail on this guy, a wash reveals plenty of interest. The mane is pretty stylised so I went really dark with it to hide the lack of 'hairiness'.

The heroes! Ranger, Knight, Dwarf and Barbarian. They're on Heroclix style bases which count down hit points. The weapons are theoretically interchangeable as they can find 'golden' weapons along the way that increase potency. I've glued these in though, players can just add the golden weapon to their 'base camp' to show they have one. The Knight has a replacement axe as one of the weapons was missing. The Ranger is definitely Strider with his elf-stone on his brow and the Barbarian I decided was absolutely Hulk Hogan with his porn star moustache. I've kept their attire to the colour of the base for ease of identification.

Hoping to get some games in on Saturday as part of BOYL. Come find me if you'd like to play!

Encounters for Firetop Mountain

The gauntlet had been thrown down... Now I needed to raid my stash of figures to see if I could fill the cast of models needed for the Encounters deck in the Warlock of Firetop Mountain board game. Initially I thought it would be a good excuse to go to the Midlam website and buy in some lovely shiny new toys (they have a wonderful dwarf jester I thought would make a perfect fool), but the sensible part of me said I should try and do as much as possible from what I already had. After all, wasn't I supposed to be working my way through the lead pile not adding to it? And with BOYL fast approaching I needed to be saving my cash and couldn't afford the time for delivery in any case. Well then, to the treasure chest...

As it transpires I had pretty much everything I needed. I was short a suitable model for a ghoul, a minotaur and an orc but Mike at Broadsword Miniatures was seeing me the following day at Attack! and generously took a look through his pile, laying his hands on some perfect models. But I am getting ahead of myself as the monsters will be the focus of my next post. For this one we're looking at the NPCs who apparently make their homes in the Warlock's dungeon.

The chef in the larder had to be a halfling. I imagine him warding off hungry greenskins with his trusty rolling pin. This is an Old School Miniatures halfling, I swapped out his pitchfork for a scratch built giant rolling pin. The model is clearly wearing chef's whites and proffering the weary adventurer a hearty burger to sustain them.

The trader has been down here for some time and has grown a fine beard since his portrait was painted. Here he is checking to see if he needs to order a restock of wine, best not to ask where it comes from. This is one of the hundreds of Old Glory Revolting Peasants I bought for my medieval city, I can spare one to this project.

As it turns out I DID have a jester in the pile! He's not the most exquisite figure ever sculpted but he serves the purpose. Slightly too jolly for the role, I like the morose expression and pose on the artwork, but I painted him with a sad face under his bright make up anyhow.

This hungry beggar has been in the wars. I suspect he's a previous adventurer who has suffered in his attempt to raid the dungeon and ended up selling most of what he had to the trader or losing it to the nefarious rogues who share his new home.

The trickster in his elaborate garb is one of my favourite matches. I think he's a landsknecht of some kind. I gave him a beaker of beer in the empty hand that should be holding a pike. Not someone I would trust, would you?

I think the sage might be a Midlam miniature, bought to be a trader in the rug market in my medieval city but now co-opted into the dungeon. He's perhaps a little too animated but maybe he's just enthusiastic in the imparting of wisdom.

The thief is another halfling. ex-Grenadier this time. Of all the NPCs this role I had the most choice for having half a dozen knife-wielding, cloaked figures. I thought this one looked the most sneaky though, and halfling rogue is so DnD it had to happen.

I was really pleased with the pick pocket match too, even though it's not the most elegant model. The fancy hood, cloak and even the spotty bag of swag are such an excellent fit. The pick pocket is actually a Treasure item rather than an Encounter since she can be hired to steal from other players.

Shylock the moneylender is such a perfect match to the art he may have been the inspiration for it! Not sure what he is, maybe a Citadel Fantasy Specials figure? Anyhow the stereotype is probably unacceptable these days but I reckon this is what Shakespeare would have had in mind. As soon as I saw him I knew that was Shylock.

Two of these are Monsters rather than NPCs, but they crept into the photo anyhow. The wight is a Northstar miniature who was destined for my undead army but managed to remain unpainted, awaiting his starring role in this project! He's a lot more armoured than the drawing, which looks more like a romantic poet recovering from a  night on the opium, nevertheless I didn't actually have a Lord Byron figure in my lead pile, certainly not an undead one, and he looks more threatening this way. The vampire is a Dark Eye figure from Ral Partha Europe (an aged summoner I think?) but with his big collar on his cloak was the most vampiric thing in my lead pile. He's obviously happy in his work!

The hexmaster has also suffered from the lack of razor blades in Firetop Mountain! He's grown a fine, shaggy beard but still has his crazy eyes and powers of cursing.

Next on Firetop Mountain, the nasty monsters!

Heroes for Firetop Mountain

BOYL approaches once more. This year my plan was to take nothing and just join in with Paul's big game that he's been working on painting for the last... three? four? years. Sadly that's now not able to happen so at our GROG meets we have been discussing what to bring. We've settled on some of the GW bookshelf board games and I'm going to be bringing Warlock of Firetop Mountain.

This is not my original set which I picked up (second hand) from a wonderful independent games shop in Bournemouth around 1995. That one only had two of the heroes in- the dwarf and barbarian. I spent the early years of Oldhammer (around 2009/10 I guess) picking up the rest of the heroes to complete the set and even ended up with a spare barbarian which I painted for an Oldhammer Forum warband-

Sadly this now-completed set somehow got lost in the move to our current house (I keep imagining I will discover it behind a bookcase sometime). Last year when I had Covid in the run up to BOYL I found a reasonably-priced copy on eBay and decided to replace it. The box isn't in quite as good condition and it was missing the rules but all the pieces were there. It seemed like a suitable thing to take to BOYL this year. Just one issue- the heroes weren't painted. Could I get them painted in time?

Yes, it turns out that I could. They were surprisingly quick and fun to paint for such basic models. They are, I think, the second set of boardgame plastics GW produced (the first being Dungeonquest a year earlier) and the Psychostyrene Dwarf and Drastik Plastik orcs had been produced for Warhammer. A year later the classic Regiments set would hit the shelves with some models that a light years ahead of these in terms of detail and execution, but weirdly even the Dungeonquest figures are probably better executed than these guys. Nevertheless they're still better than most of the soft plastic board game toys supplied by a lot of modern manufacturers. I've kept them on their original plastic disc bases but mounted these of 20mm rounds (they are small spaces after all!) and disguised the edges with some putty paving slabs.

But now there's a problem... I have three weeks and two weekends left before BOYL and as always another seed has been sown... Could I get figures for all of the encounters? What about all the monsters? Wouldn't it be cool if everything was represented?...

I had a rummage in my lead pile and yes, I could, but would I have time to paint them? Damn! Another high pressure BOYL painting challenge when I'm meant to be finishing off my Skaven! Stay tuned...

The classic quartet of dungeon heroes.

Dragonmeet Rundown

Time to tell you how great Dragonmeet was...

Explaining Tripods to two groups simultaneously, Andy the Balrog takes the Peg boys through a demo game.

This was our first year attending Dragonmeet as Oakbound Games and it was a brilliant experience. Their new venue at Earl's Court seems to have been a massive success as over 1600 people attended over the eight hours the event was running, that's an average of 200 people per hour- and most of them seemed to stop at the Oakbound stall. The stands were really very good value for the size and space and there was ample on-street parking around, despite the arrival of a Christmas Market on the main road nearby.

It was really great to see so many little companies and independent games creators and traders around. In contrast to the Games Expo, where there was lots of independents but most people seemed to be shopping at Leisure Games' discounted stand, it was brilliant to see so many of the little people shifting so much stock and receiving so much attention. We sold out of miniatures and nearly sold all our remaining copies of Tripods, not to mention taking orders on a few more of the limited edition Woods background books.

In the gaming room there was plenty of space, but so many varied games going on, including an enormous Pandemic challenge. Sadly we didn't get to watch much because of being so busy, but being positioned next to the door we were party to a lot of the highs and lows of the attempt to halt the infection! We also got to participate in the splendid peg game...

I finally got round to picking up the Investigator and Keeper's guide for Achtung Cthulhu and am looking forward to studying the Third Reich's interaction with the Old Ones. I also got some bargains off the bring and buy (helped to be dropping off stuff as they came in!) and some very nice pyrogravured (not laser etched!) jewellery for Christmas presents.

The atmosphere of the place was really nice, everybody was very positive and there were, to my knowledge, no issues with harassment or derision.

Thanks and congratulations to the excellent Modiphius Entertainment who organised the day, I'll definitely be returning to Dragonmeet!

Steampunks in Spaaaaace!

We had a jolly splendid time this weekend at the spiffing Steampunks in Space event at the National Space Centre. Having missed seeing our friend Thaddeus Tinker, Lady Elsie, Jack Union and the fabulous chaps and chapesses from Modiphius at the Asylum this year it was great to have a chance to catch up.

We were there with Tripods! which you might remember is out War of the Worlds themed board game. Tripey had a full makeover for the event, which was just as well, for we were confronted by the terrible sight of a full sized Tripod looming from the shadows!

We'll be at Dragonmeet this weekend with Tripods! and hopefully the first batch of castings from The Woods Kickstarter so if you're London way it'd be great to see you. And if not, you can still order Tripods! by following the links at The oakbound website. Perfect Christmas present for the discerning Steampunk, Board Gamer or Sci Fi fan. Ooooolaaaaaa!

Tripods attack Leicester!

It's all been a bit quiet on the Martian front lately...

No, not the Android's Dungeon game, the Oakbound Games board game Tripods! We took the game to the UK Games Expo back in April where it was very positively received despite being pipped to 'New Game of the Year' by Asmodee's "Splendour". That hasn't deterred us, since Asmodee themselves are now reviewing Tripods! with the possibility of becoming involved at some point in the future.

Well there are a few copies left from our original print run, and your last chance to pick one up may be coming up in the next few weeks. First up there's

STEAMPUNKS IN SPACE!
Leicester, National Space Centre
29-30th November

and then

DRAGONMEET
London, Earl's Court
6th December

If you can't make it to either but would like to know some more about this War of the Worlds boardgame you can find us on Facebook and at the Oakbound website.
