Olley's Ogres

Strictly speaking these boys aren't newly painted (most of them) but since I finished the last two on Saturday I thought this was a good opportunity to rebase them and take new pics in my lightbox.

I had a free afternoon after packing the car for Overlord this weekend but had a complete painting block, couldn't decide what to start on. Doesn't happen to me very often. I knew I wasn't in the mood for sculpting, a couple of things I thought I could start weren't undercoated and I couldn't be bothered to get the sprays out (it was cold outside)... Ordinarily I would be cracking on with the new month's Odds and Sods challenge but this one is a quandary since the theme is 'flying' and I don't really have anything I want to work on that fits. Possibly my Jabberwock but he's not primed yet and I don't quite know what I am going to do with him.

Surveying my shelves I noticed I only actually had two Bob Olley ogres unpainted. I ought to be able to get those done in an afternoon. That was decided then, I'd finish something off for March at least! One of those two was the shaman dude to the left above. Most of these ogres are from Ral Partha Europe but these two new ones are from the range Bob Olley sculpted for Fantasy Warlord (not the range held by Alternative Armies, the other one, still available from SHQ Miniatures as 'large ogre urucks'). They fit pretty well size-wise, just a little bigger, and being Bob Olley the style is consistent enough.

It was actually of this range that launched the little band. The guy on the right here (large ogre hunter) I spotted on another blog, I think it was JB Asslessman's? He looked so great I had to get one. It was appropriate therefore that I started and ended the band by painting this guy since the other unpainted figure I had to complete was the second (to the left). I gave him a different weapon for variation. It was actually pretty tricky painting the new ones as I hadn't written down my colours and had to guess. I couldn't remember if I painted them before I started using Foundry paints, before I started using Quickshades etc... But I think they came out pretty well and don't look out of place.

I also rebased the ones I had painted before. They were on 60mm round, lipped bases which looked great but were really much too big for the figures. If nothing else it was taking up too much room on the shelf! I've now put them on 40mm rounds which are a more warhammer appropriate size. For some reason my base supplier doesn't sell 40mm squares, but hey I like a round base anyhow.

Oh, and I know one of these ogres isn't a Bob Olley sculpt, but I think he fits just fine. Spot the Jes!

  1. nice.. I'm gonna probebly make a huge mistake but.. I'm gonna say.. Second photo, Orge with horned helmet and double-handing the Axe seams like a Jes Goodwin sculpt to me.. The head expression is mostly making me think that.. but then... hang on.. did you do a weapon swap on him? Regiment of Renown Orgre set...

    1. Yes, correct. He's an old Golgfag. His mace head had snapped off so that's a Fomorian axe he's gripping.

  2. We knew about Olley's ogres from RPE, but not their "brothers" from SHQ Miniatures - we've been tempted to buy them for a long time. It seems to us that the latest additions to your clan are a perfect fit, both in terms of sculpting style and your paintjob from memory. The 40mm bases are actually more proportionate. A question about already painted ogres: does the standard bearer have a real canvas flag?

    1. The SHQ ones are a bit bigger, but they fit well. I don't know what the Uruck Hero looks like, might have to take a punt one day! Not keen on the Ogre Warrior though. Yes, it's a crepe bandage flag. Good for splitting the ends and making look tatty. I daub it with PVA to provide a base for painting and crease it when the glue is almost dry so it holds a natural kind of fold.
